Marriage

The five threats to oneness:

  1. Cultural changes.

1950: High family value:  2010 individual is valued.

Faith was a part of culture        faith must be separated

Limited media influence           Unlimited media influence

Fathers present and active         Fathers: absent or passive

Children were viewed

As a blessing                            Children: burden

  1. Ignorance.

Unreal expectations. Ladies tend to view marriage in light of a romance novel. While men tend to view marriage sex.

  1. Selfishness:

Isa 53:6

We all, like sheep, have gone astray,

each of us has turned to his own way;

and the Lord has laid on him

the iniquity of us all.

NIV

James…envy…self seeking

  1.  Failure to understand life is difficult.

1 Cor 7:28

28 But if you should marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin should marry, she has not sinned. Yet such will have trouble in this life, and I am trying to spare you.

NASB

Count it all joy….

Happy Holy

  1. Extramarital affairs.

Marriage

The third purpose the scripture gives yus for marriage is:

To reproduce Godly offspring.

  • Righteousness would reign on the earth.

Gen 1:28

28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

NIV

Have kids: Create culture, is the big idea here.

Experience goodness, and create goodness….exude

Mal 2:15

15 Has not [the Lord] made them one? In flesh and spirit they are his. And why one? Because he was seeking godly offspring. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith with the wife of your youth.

Marriage

Gods purposes for marriage.

  1. Companionship.

Gen 2:18

18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

NIV

Scripture teaches us that of all the things God created, one thing was not good. It is not good for man to be alone. God created for him a helper. An ezer knedgo as the hebrew puts it. The word means a strength that assists. She was made not from his head, that she might rule over him. She was made not from from his foot, that she might be beneath him. She was made from his side, near his heart, so that she would be an intimate companion.

  1. To mirror Gods purposes on the planet.

Gen 1:27

27 So God created man in his own image,

in the image of God he created him;

male and female he created them.

NIV

Imago Dei, (image of God). The second and arguably the first puporse for marriage, is to reveal Gods glory in the earth.

Marriage

Oneness

Gods design for marriage is oneness. Easier said than done, right?

  1. Marriage is Gods idea.

Matt 19:4-6

4 And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’  5 and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?  6 So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”Nkjv

The greates barrier to oneness is our sinfulness. We are sinners by nature and choice, and that is the probelm.

Marriage is not designed to make you happy, it is designed to make you holy. Marriage will reveal your faults. it will reveal more issues you never knew you had, and more sin than you ever dreamed possible. The realtionship will reveal selfishness, in orde that God might work out of you selflessness. Marriage will reveal pride, so that God might make you humble.

Mosaic Miami Church Daily Devotional

Mosaic Miami Church

The following is an excerpt from Charles Spurgeon.

“Therefore, brethren, we are debtors.”—Romans 8:12.

AS God’s creatures, we are all debtors to Him: to obey Him with all our body, and soul, and strength. Having broken His commandments, as we all have, we are debtors to His justice, and we owe to Him a vast amount which we are not able to pay. But of the Christian it can be said that he does not owe God’s justice anything, for Christ has paid the debt His people owed; for this reason the believer owes the more to love. I am a debtor to God’s grace and forgiving mercy; but I am no debtor to His justice, for He will never accuse me of a debt already paid. Christ said, “It is finished!” and by that He meant, that whatever His people owed was wiped away for ever from the book of remembrance. Christ, to the uttermost, has satisfied divine justice; the account is settled; the handwriting is nailed to the cross; the receipt is given, and we are debtors to God’s justice no longer. But then, because we are not debtors to our Lord in that sense, we become ten times more debtors to God than we should have been otherwise. Christian, pause and ponder for a moment. What a debtor thou art to divine sovereignty! How much thou owest to His disinterested love, for He gave His own Son that He might die for thee. Consider how much you owe to His forgiving grace, that after ten thousand affronts He loves you as infinitely as ever. Consider what you owe to His power; how He has raised you from your death in sin; how He has preserved your spiritual life; how He has kept you from falling; and how, though a thousand enemies have beset your path, you have been able to hold on your way. Consider what you owe to His immutability. Though you have changed a thousand times, He has not changed once. Thou art as deep in debt as thou canst be to every attribute of God. To God thou owest thyself, and all thou hast—yield thyself as a living sacrifice, it is but thy reasonable service.
