MLK: Service Project

Martin Luther King Jr. said “Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.“  Join with thousands of Americans across the country as they commemorate Martin Luther King’s vision and dream by serving their communities.

This Saturday, January 17th, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, we will be participating in a service project at Olinda Elementary School in Liberty City.  Liberty City is a predominantly African American community of Miami with a history of oppression and poverty.  As we show love to the people in that community, we move toward the healing of deep seated wounds and the reconciliation of a very divided city.  Show that love by fixing up the school these children have to be in every single day.  We will help paint murals and landscape the school.

As an additional perk, all participants will receive a delicious free meal from the Lost and Found Saloon.

If you are interested in joining, please email Julie at uvita2007@gmail.com by WEDNESDAY.

TML’s primary focus is in the southwest quadrant of Overtown and Downtown Miami. Downtown Miami and Overtown is a small inner-city community of 12,000 people in the midst of metropolitan Miami-Dade (2.3 million). This area is the poorest community in the State of Florida. The community is plagued with many consequences of poverty including high crime, drug trafficking and use, high teenage pregnancy rate, single parent families, substandard housing, failed education and lack of quality activities.

Please consider serving the youth and children of Overtown this Holiday. If you’re interested in connecting please contact Christy Craddock at (305) 416-0435, ext 202 or christy@touchingmiamiwithlove.org

Mosaic Updates

We are going to have a Candy Station at Dadeland Mall. Yeah… we are going there to shamelessly promote Christ thru propaganda about the community at Mosaic.

If you would like to join us we are looking for some fun loving people to come and hand out candy prior to Raul/Rachels costume party. We will be at the mall from 5-8pm, sending teams throughout the mall to hand out candy…..yes you can and should dress up….and bring your kids. A suggestion would be that we limit/omit the vampire devil darkness look….ahhh….we are christians. the purpose is to leverage the day and use it to bring the light of the kingdom….

Now that said….you do not have to be moses….if you are dressing up use your imagination and your discretion. I am going for the super hero look. Shari wants me to be mark anthony while she is cleopatra. I think she just likes my legs in a toga.

We also need candy bags so bring a few pounds. You can bring it to Mosaic on sunday.

This sunday looks like it is going to be a “Special Sunday“…..the school is tenting the building next to the gym and we cannot use the gym….so we are going to have church outside at the pavilion. so…. we are going with the picnic theme this week. it should be cool if the weather is good. we are working on a contingency plan should the weather not be favorable. we are going to have sandwiches…you can bring some picnic stuff…lawn chairs your coolest sunglasses…cuz mosaic will be kickin it nature style this week.

We have a podcast now for all of you, this gives you an opportunity to check out a replay of the message. go to the web site mosaicmiami.org and click the podcast button on the right and you’ll be ready to rock.

The CCDA conference is going on downtown starting today thru saturday. ccda.org if you are interested.

We are also looking for volunteers to hand out water on voting day. If you have an hour or two we need you. It is a great opportunity to promote the kingdom thru the community at mosaic. We are targeting the Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, South Miami voting stations.

Community Organizing & Principles of Asset Based Community Development Workshop

Community Development and Community Organizing are “inside” stories. When it is done appropriately, the people will say “We did it ourselves!” It is a process of engaging the voices, resources and actions of the residents so that they become the agents of change in their own lives and in the life of the community. During this workshop we will teach practical techniques on how to organize your community by discovering individual gifts and resources in the community.

PRESENTERS: Delia Perez, Director of the Communities First Initiative Miami & Nancy Aardema, Executive Director of the Logan Square Neighborhood Association (LSNA) in Chicago, Illinois.

Hosted by: Communities First Initiative Miami & Urban Resurrection

Right to the City: Who’s City? Our City!

The 40th annual convening of the United States Conference of Mayors will take place in Miami, Florida from June 20-24, 2008. Under the call “Who’s City? Our City!,” we will mobilize to assert our rights to live, work, play, pray, and govern over the city.

Over the last twenty years, the federal government has cut programs and services, placing a greater burden on state and city governments. Unable to handle the pressure, cities are using privatization to sell land, programs, and resources to make ends meet. As a result, instead of working with community, labor, cultural, academic and faith-based communities, mayors are cutting deals with luxury developers and multi-national corporations.

Affordable housing, public space, transportation, schools, are all being sold to the highest bidder, costing us our services, programs, access, resources and, in general, our right to the city.

Right to the City is a national alliance of organizations taking back our cities from the throws of gentrification. Led by community-based grassroots organizations, the alliance spans seven cities and includes legal, media, and academic advocates from across the nation. The movement against gentrification is growing across the United States. We are moving beyond the barrios, beyond the streets, to combat the root causes of displacement, privatization, and poor governance of our cities. Join us as we TAKE BACK THE CITY!

SEDER DINNER ($12 per peson)

Miami Shores (North)
Sunday, April 20 @ 7PM
8040 NE 8 Court
Miami FL 33138

Coral Gables (South)
Saturday, April 19 @ 7PM
3154 Carter St.
Coconut Grove, FL 33133

RSVP: Shari at sharicharles@hotmail.com

For those of you who do not know: A Seder, is the passover meal, it is a dinner, a “telling” of the story of exodus, it is also the meal Jesus celebrated with His disciples before His crucifixtion…the last supper. it is full of metaphors, and other cool things that will deepen your faith and understanding of the gospel.

All are invited, you are also encouraged to invite friends and outsiders to the faith, since it is traditional to welcome strangers at this time. It should be really cool. We need a head count so please RSVP by email, and or sign up at mosaic at the offering table.

The dates are Saturday, April 19 in the Grove and Sunday, April 20th at Kevin and Shari’s. The seder will start at 7 pm sharp for a 2 hours dinner. If you are broke and can’t afford $12.00… I am sure we can get you covered. Don’t have your budget be an obstacle.

An Invitation To New Life In Community

Michael Philip of Urban Resurection makes an invitation for a New Life in Community on his blog THREADS as a response to the article “Inner-City Riches” by Bart Campolo.

It struck a cord for a few reasons. First, it was encouraging to hear that the ideal we are striving for in our ministry is attainable and real and can be deep and fulfilling. This occurs when like minded Christ followers move into a neighborhood together and commit to each other and to God to support an love each other and those they live among. Second, it almost made me cry…this is because we so long for just such a community of believers to live and work along side of us as we minister in the city of Miami.
