This spring, the University of Miami’s Council of International Students and Organizations (COISO) will be hosting the Believe it Or Not: Myths and Superstitions for international week. This event will celebrating all of the world’s cultures by showcasing the myths and superstitions found in each. All events are free and are open to the public.
Latin Night: Monday, April 7, 2008 at 7:00 PM at the University of Miami University Center Patio
“Hispanic Unity†Latin Night will encompass all areas of Hispanic influence (U.S., Middle and South America, Spain) in a three-fold manner: by celebration Hispanic cultures, sharing the myths and legends of the ancestors of modern Hispanic culture, and dispelling the modern day myths associated with Hispanic individuals and educating everyone on the issues that are affecting our community the most.
African/Middle Eastern Night: Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at 7:00 PM at the University of Miami University Center Patio
This event will link two seemly distinct cultures by focusing on the myths and superstitions found in each. Themed the 7 Voyages of Sinbad, African/Middle Eastern Night will educate the community about the myths of the past and clarify the myths of the present.
Haunted House Night: Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at 7:00 PM at the University of Miami University Center Patio
COISO will be creating a “real†haunted house that will display dramatic displays focusing on world issues that should be haunting us. These issues will include: child soldiers, labor, gangs, orphans, trafficking, and healthcare. This night will also include a free showing of a new movie from the producers of “Invisible Children.â€
Asian/Pacific Islander Night: Thursday, April 10, 2008 at 7:00 PM at the University of Miami University Center Patio
Immerse yourself in the exotic and intriguing scents of the Asian Pacific. Behold the mystical creation of the Eastern world. Experience a walk through a bustling marketplace. Be entranced by colorful dances of the old world, the new, and the future. Prepare to be tantalized by the myths and superstitions of the unknown all the while learning about the rich history of the East and the Pacific. Experience and appreciate the Asian Pacific like you have never before.
Caribbean Night: Friday, April 11, 2008 at 7:00 PM at the University of Miami University Center Patio
Haunted, gruesome, and unlike any place in the world, the Caribbean is home to many myths and superstitions. While you are educate on Caribbean superstitions you will see how the different islands in the Caribbean share common myths and are not only connected through culture.
